From holiday cover to cross-charity support, short-term fostering is a great way to help hounds in need when you are restricted on time!

Short-Term Support Fostering

What Is Support Fostering?

We rely entirely on our foster volunteers to support our mission of helping greyhounds, and their sighthound friends, in need.

But while fostering is incredibly rewarding, it is potentially a long-term commitment as you never know how long it might be before a hound gets adopted.  You could have a hound for a couple of weeks or a couple of months!  That commitment means that people that want to help, but can't...which is why we offer Support Fostering.

Support Fostering is providing a safe home away from home for a pre-arrranged time period when our Team Zoomie Fosterers are unavailable, for instance they are going on holiday, have a weekend away or have to travel for work.

The Zoomie Zone will, at times, will provide foster space for hounds from other charities on a temporary basis if they are struggling to cope with the kennel environment and they do not have immediate foster space available within their own organisation.  There may be other reasons such as their requiring close monitoring due to medical concerns or surgery recovery which cannot be achieved in a kennel environment, or due to other urgent situations.

These hounds would remain in the keepership of the other charity and return to their care after a pre-set time period.

If you choose to foster, we'll provide everything you need*.  All we ask is you give your foster hound all the love, attention and care that you can, as if they are your own hound.  Some may require medication or follow behaviour development plans while they are with you, but you will have the full support of our team throughout the foster period, even if it is only for one night.

When you sign up to be a Support Foster with us, you get:

  • The reward of helping both hounds in need, and our amazing foster team, in a way that works for you

  • All the benefits of hound ownership but without the long-term commitment

  • Food, equipment and veterinary care will be provided*

  • Full support from our experienced team and complete confidentiality

*Food, enrichment and equipment will be provided, and neccesary veterinary costs covered, by The Zoomie Zone for the duration of the foster period, provided that foster carers follow the instructions and guidelines set out by our team.  It is not possible to reinburse unauthorised purchases. Please note that the dogs are not insured while in our care, and each veterinary visit represents an ongoing cost to the charity. In the case of injuries or unexpected expenses resulting from a direct breach of the fostering contract, for example, allowing the foster dog off-lead in a public park, resulting in a dog fight, we would ask that the foster carer make contribution toward the associated costs.

Sound Good?

This is what we are looking for in our Support Foster homes:

  • You must be over 18 years old and, ideally, not have any children in the home under the age of 10.

  • Have some experience for caring for dogs, particularly sighthounds

  • Have access to their own garden with 6ft fencing

  • A driving licence, and access to a vehicle (or another resident in the home that does), living within 60 minutes of Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

  • Commitment to following instructions set out by our team in meeting the hounds’ individual needs

  • Have someone at home the majority of the time

  • Be able to commit at least 1 week to each foster, up to 4 weeks would be beneficial

Please note that homes with younger children or existing dogs will be considered, but this may result in limitations as to what hounds are appropriate to foster in the home.

Distance and vehicular access are also to ensure reasonable driving distance for our vets, particularly for emergencies, and animal transports.

How Do You Sign Up?

If you are interested in fostering, or would like some further information, please contact us to book in a call!

Foster application calls take up to an hour.  During this time we will discuss you, your home, routine and a great many other aspects to ensure it is a safe and welcoming environment for a hound in need.  We will also discuss your experience, and what type of fostering you want to register for and the types of hounds you feel confident and comfortable taking on.

After we’ve done this, we will arrange a home check to come and meet you in person and ensure the home and garden is secure.

If all goes well, and we’re happy to proceed with your application, we’ll sign you up as a foster carer!

Then, as and when you we need your help, we will call you to discuss the case and go from there!
